Peaceful Nuclear Energy
Page Content
Nuclear energy generation represents a viable and attractive source of electricity for the United Arab Emirates from economic, environmental, reliability of supply, and national infrastructure development perspectives. Further, the UAE is capable of developing this technology safely and efficiently, so that electricity can be delivered to power the grid by as early as 2017.
This resulted in the creation of an entirely new economic sector in the country, the renewable or future energy sector, and today the Emirate is emerging as an investment hot spot in these vital sectors.
The United Arab Emirates has a critical need for new, clean sources of electricity. Studies conducted by the Government of Abu Dhabi show that national annual peak demand for electricity is calculated to rise more than 40,000 megawatts by 2020, a cumulative annual growth rate of about 9 percent. Faced with this challenge, the UAE government evaluated all alternatives for power generation, taking into consideration four factors: economics, the environment, security of supply, and the potential for long term economic development. This evaluation has led to the conclusion that a peaceful, civil nuclear power program is a viable solution to the country’s energy needs.
